An unconference is certainly not your typical type of conference! If you are used to, or have a preference for, conferences where you arrive in the knowledge of a fixed agenda and sessions throughout the day, you will find an unconference refreshingly different.
Unconferences are driven entirely by those people present: You set the areas that will be discussed throughout the day. Rules and conventions are not the important thing for these events, but there are 5 that are nice and simple:
- The people who come are the best people who could have come.
- Whatever happens is the only thing that could have happened.
- It starts when it starts.
- It’s over when it’s over.
- The Law of Two Feet (“If you are not learning or contributing to a talk or presentation or discussion it is your responsibility to find somewhere where you can contribute or learn”).
Like all ‘laws’ or ‘principles’ at an unconference, participants should feel free to break any or all of these rules if they feel that they are not contributing to the intellectual rigour or content of the event.
